FAQ

Who needs a tutor?

There are several ways that you can use a tutor. Most commonly, you might want to meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to go over classwork and homework that is confusing in order to get the most out of your math class.

If you’re taking an online class, it can be nice to have someone “live” to ask questions of. Sometimes there is a specific part of a math class, like adding fractions or doing derivatives, that’s holding you back and a tutor can get  you over the hump. Also, you may just schedule a session before your tests so you can review.

If you’re trying to brush up for a placement test, or you want to review in August before school starts, or if you’re going back to college after years off, you might want a few sessions to knock the rust off.

A good tutor does what will serve the student best. Remember it is your session, you get to decide what you need.

Do you give homework?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If my student and I both think that they need more practice on a topic, I have resources that I can share. It’s important to be sure that the student has mastered the topic, but there is no point in loading someone down with busywork.

How do I pay you?

You pay when you schedule a session. There are several options available.

How often should we meet?

We should meet as often as will be helpful to you. Commonly, students see me once or twice a week.  Please see “Who needs a tutor?” for more details.

How long are the sessions?

Usually the sessions are an hour long. Occasionally, for instance when studying for an important test, a student will ask for two hours. I don’t recommend more than two hours, as it’s really hard to retain that much new material.

Do you have references?

Yes, feel free to contact me and I will send you references.

What ages do you tutor?

Any age from first grade through calculus. This is part of what I love about my job - I get to work with such a variety of people. Since I went back to school as an adult with two small children, I have a clear understanding of what returning college students have to contend with.
